My favoured photographic subjects; bird photography has been a natural progression from birding from a young age.

I have decided to group my bird images on the basis of the types of habitat each species can be found in. Being able to fly, birds naturally can be found in a variety of different habitats. I have tried to include them in the gallery that describes the habitat/environment where they are most likely to be seen. I guess that is one of the appeals for me; that birds can be encountered just about anywhere especially during migration.

The four habitat categories I have selected are:

  • Sea (Marine) - This comprises birds typically found in marine colonies on islands, cliffs and along coasts including birds such as terns, auks and gannets.
  • Coast - For the purposes of this portfolio, this type of habitat includes coastal marshes; beaches; and ponds and lakes. The gallery includes passerines such as buntings that are found on beaches and coastal marshes in the winter months.
  • Lakes and Inland Waters - The types of habitat here include rural and urban lakes; streams; and rivers.
  • Woodland, Gardens and Urban - This description includes woods; forests; urban and rural gardens; and towns and cities.
  • Mountain, Moorland and Farmland -There is a number of different species that, at different times of the year, can be seen in lowland farm fields and at the tops of mountains e.g. Dotterel. This gallery includes habitats including heathland; open fields; hedgerows, moors and open mountain environments.
